Donald Trump Jr. has called on Ukrainian authorities to explain why they did not notify U.S. officials about a man allegedly attempting to acquire military weapons to assassinate his father during the 2024 presidential campaign. Trump Jr. responded on social media Tuesday following recent revelations about Ryan Wesley Routh, a pro-Ukraine activist who is facing federal charges after being arrested near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida in September.
According to newly surfaced court documents obtained by Fox News, Routh, a convicted felon, allegedly sought to purchase weapons from someone he believed had access to Ukraine’s military arsenal. The documents revealed Routh’s plan to assassinate Donald Trump to stop his 2024 election bid.
“If you think it’s bad that Ukraine never said thank you for everything the United States has done for them,” Trump Jr. wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “the fact that they seemingly did not tell us that this sociopath literally tried to buy arms from them to assassinate my father seems like a much bigger deal. Wonder why?!?”
Routh, who had unsuccessfully tried to enlist in the Ukrainian military in 2022, remained engaged in the conflict, working to recruit former Afghan soldiers to fight on Ukraine’s behalf. In August 2024, prosecutors say Routh used an encrypted messaging app to contact an individual he believed could supply him with weapons, including a Russian RPG grenade launcher and a U.S.-made Stinger missile. Routh allegedly stated his goal: “I need the equipment so that Trump don’t [sic] get elected.” He also suggested that obtaining the arms would be easy, claiming “one missing would not be noticed.”
Despite his attempts, Routh never received the requested weapons. He was arrested shortly afterward near Mar-a-Lago and is now facing a trial set for September, where he faces a potential life sentence if convicted.
