British Prime Minister (PM) Keir Starmer has urged European nations to take decisive action in supporting Ukraine, declaring that the world stands at a "crossroads in history." Speaking after a high-profile defence summit in London, he outlined a four-step plan aimed at reinforcing Ukraine’s security and deterring future aggression.
At Lancaster House, Starmer announced a £1.6 billion finance package to help Ukraine acquire over 5,000 missiles. He emphasised that “every nation must contribute” in some form, warning that inaction was not an option.
His four-step strategy includes: maintaining the flow of military aid and increasing economic pressure on Russia; ensuring any peace agreement guarantees Ukraine’s sovereignty and security; strengthening Ukraine’s defensive capabilities to prevent future invasions; and forming a “coalition of the willing” to uphold any peace deal.
"Not every nation will participate, but that doesn’t mean we sit back. Those willing must act with urgency," Starmer stated. He pledged that the UK would support the effort with both ground and air forces, urging Europe to take the lead.
The summit was attended by 19 global leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, French President Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Zelensky later travelled to Sandringham to meet King Charles.
Discussions followed a tense exchange between Zelensky and former US President Donald Trump at the White House. However, Starmer dismissed concerns about America’s commitment to Ukraine, insisting that Western allies remain united.
Leaders agreed to reconvene soon to advance their plans. "This is not a time for more talk—it’s time to act, step up, and lead," Starmer asserted.
