Syria’s interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa is heading to Saudi Arabia for his first international visit since the ousting of Bashar al-Assad, according to his office. A photo shared on X by the presidency shows Sharaa and his foreign minister aboard a private jet, captioned: “President Sharaa and Asaad al-Shaibani travel to Saudi Arabia for first official visit.”
Sharaa, leader of the Islamist group that toppled Assad in December, was named interim president last Wednesday. Saudi Arabia's King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman were among the first to congratulate him on his appointment.
Syria is looking to secure financial support from wealthy Gulf nations to help rebuild its war-torn country and revive its economy. On Thursday, Qatar's Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, visited Damascus, emphasizing the urgent need for a government that represents all segments of Syrian society. This, he said, is essential to stabilize the country and advance reconstruction and development efforts.
Since Assad’s removal, Syria's new leadership has seen a steady influx of diplomatic visitors.
