Ahead of the upcoming holy Eid-ul-Azha, the Bangladesh Bank has issued 10 directives to take necessary measures by setting up counterfeit note detection booths at all approved sacrificial cattle markets across Bangladesh (up to upazila level) in order to prevent the activities of counterfeit currency syndicates.
The instructions were sent on Sunday by the Currency Management Department of the central bank to the managing directors and chief executive officers of all scheduled banks.
10 instructions are;
1. A list of the scheduled banks assigned to provide free currency verification services for cattle traders and buyers at the approved cattle markets of Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation from the opening day of the markets until the night before Eid, through experienced cash officers using counterfeit note detection machines, is attached herewith.
For the purpose of providing services at these cattle markets, the names, designations, and mobile numbers of the designated officials should be sent along with the name, designation, and mobile number of one suitable officer nominated as your bank’s coordinator by 17/05/2026 to the email addresses [email protected] and [email protected].
It is noted that the coordinator appointed by your bank will monitor the activities of the officials deployed at the respective cattle markets.
2. In districts outside Dhaka where Bangladesh Bank offices are located, instructions should be issued to the respective regional offices/major branches to provide necessary assistance in implementing similar arrangements under the leadership of the concerned Bangladesh Bank offices at cattle markets approved by the respective city corporations/municipalities.
3. In districts where there are no Bangladesh Bank offices, Sonali Bank PLC’s chest branches have been assigned the responsibility of distributing duties among different banks at cattle markets approved by city corporations, municipalities, and thana/upazila authorities.
Accordingly, instructions should be issued to your bank’s district and upazila-level branches to provide note verification services at the cattle markets as per the responsibilities allocated by the respective chest branches of Sonali Bank PLC.
4. Cash counting facilities must be provided at the booths installed at the cattle markets.
5. For the smooth establishment and operation of booths, coordination and cooperation may be sought, if necessary, from the concerned City Corporation authorities, District Municipality authorities, Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs)/concerned municipal authorities, and the leaseholders responsible for the approved cattle markets.
For overall security, coordination may also be made (if required) with the concerned Police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and Ansar authorities.
6. If any counterfeit note is detected during note verification at the booths, necessary action shall be taken in accordance with the instructions outlined in Department Circular No. Counterfeit Note: 01 (Police)/ 2007-191 dated 04/07/2007 issued by this division (then DCMPS).
7. A banner/notice must be displayed at the booths clearly stating the bank’s name along with the words “Counterfeit Note Detection Booth”.
8. The video on security features of banknotes must be displayed for customers on TV monitors installed at your bank branches, during full banking hours on every working day until Eid.
9. Officers/employees assigned to these duties may be provided with necessary financial benefits in accordance with the applicable rules and regulations of your bank for performing such responsibilities.
10. After the conclusion of the holy Eid-ul-Azha, a report on the implementation of the above instructions must be submitted to this division within 30 working days.
