The country’s inflation rose to 9.04 percent in April, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, up from 8.71 percent in March.
However, the rate remained slightly lower than the 9.17 percent recorded in April last year.
The increase was driven by higher prices in both food and non-food categories, with food inflation rising to 8.39% from 8.24% and non-food inflation climbing more sharply to 9.57% from 9.09%, reflecting sustained pressure on household living costs across the country.
Rural areas experienced marginally higher inflation at 9.05%, compared to 9.02% in urban centres, with rural non-food inflation reaching 9.81%, while urban non-food inflation stood at 9.15%.
Food inflation also remained elevated in both regions – 8.23% in rural areas and 8.81% in urban areas – highlighting widespread price increases beyond major cities.
Alongside inflation, wages recorded modest growth, with the national Wage Rate Index rising to 8.16% in April from 8.09% in March, including growth of 8.19% growth in agriculture, 8.09% in industry, and 8.31% in services, indicating that income gains continue to lag behind price increases.
