Over the past 17 months, the Income Tax Intelligence and Investigation Unit of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) has recovered Tk532 crore in evaded taxes.
During the same period, the unit uncovered information on around Tk7,000 crore in suspected tax evasion, while investigations and inquiries are ongoing into nearly 3,300 tax files.
The details were recently disclosed in a press release issued by the organisation.
According to the statement, Tk414 crore of the recovered amount was collected in the current fiscal year alone.
Taxpayers across various income brackets and institutions had evaded taxes in different assessment years, but subsequent investigations established the irregularities, prompting many to deposit outstanding dues into the state treasury.
Income Tax Intelligence Unit Commissioner Dr Lutfunnahar Begum said officials are working continuously to detect and address tax evasion.
The unit was formed to reduce tax evasion in the revenue sector, promote compliance with income tax laws, and ensure fair, transparent, and neutral tax collection.
The statement also noted that further improvements in revenue collection are possible by strengthening technological capacity and providing advanced training to enhance the efficiency of officials.
