“Revenue collection will be higher than last time, it is certain. But as expected, there has been a slight stumble in the work of the past few days,” said National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan.
He said this while talking to the reporters at the NBR building on Monday.
The NBR Reform Unity Council has been in the movement for the removal of the chairman for the past one week. The organization withdrew the movement on Sunday night due to the government's strict action. After that, the NBR chairman faced reporters for the first time on Monday.
He said, “Till 10 am today, we have collected revenue of Tk 3,60,922 crore. We will get the report of what will be deposited in the treasury for today and tomorrow. Apart from this, there are tax or VAT bills of government projects; whatever is collected, it will take some time to reconcile. Normally, it takes some time for June closing and 2-3 weeks to get the final figure.
The NBR Chairman said now our revenue reporting is systematic. We do not report manually. We report on collection in IBAS.
Stating that business and trade have been disrupted in the last few days of movement, the NBR Chairman said, “Revenue collection has stumbled. There is time today too; today they (officials) are trying. Tax officers have plans to find out who will be the tax payer, who will pay tax at the end of the year. They know this. All offices are open today, banks are too.”
He said, “I think a good amount of money will be deposited on Monday. If the government bills are adjusted, it will be more than last time, it is certain. There will be growth in a certain part. It may be close to what we expected. Even then, we will drive it again in July and bring it to the treasury. We will need money in July. The government will have to spend in July. Our activities will continue as before.”
Stating that work has started in the NBR, he said, “The customs houses have started working since Sunday afternoon. They have withdrawn the strike. As a result, everyone is relieved, especially among businessmen and policy makers. Work has started in all our offices since morning. There is full attendance. All the customs houses, ICD, VAT and tax offices are all working. Since today (Monday) is June 30 (the last day of the financial year), we have a big drive today. There is a continuous effort to bring the revenues that are in the pipeline to the treasury. That effort is going on.”
