Chinese social media giant TikTok is set to enter Japan’s online shopping market in the coming months.
According to a source familiar with the matter, the company is set to recruit sellers for its e-commerce platform, TikTok Shop, in Japan, reports Nikkei.
TikTok Shop allows users to host livestreams and sell a variety of products, from sneakers to cosmetics, earning commissions on sales. The platform is also popular for offering discounted items.
The move comes as TikTok seeks to grow its business beyond the United States, where its future remains uncertain. In March, TikTok Shop expanded into France, Germany, and Italy, further strengthening its presence in Europe.
Meanwhile, the fate of TikTok’s U.S. operations is still unclear. Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that any deal regarding the platform might be delayed, hinting at an easing of trade tensions between the U.S. and China.
