Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin has assured that commodity prices will not surge during the upcoming Ramadan as the country has a proper import management system and a sufficient stock of essentials.
He made the remark at a policy conference titled "Reasonable Prices of Food Products: Exploring Strategies for Market Supervision", held at a hotel in Dhaka on Sunday.
Regarding the market situation, the adviser said, "Even though S Alam has fled, the market remains stable. The previous government destroyed state institutions, and recovering from this will not be easy."
Sarjis Alam, chief organiser of the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, emphasised that controlling the market requires politicians to establish honest sources of income and eliminate corrupt practices like extortion.
He further stressed that while the government is working to control inflation, efforts should also be made to limit businesspeople’s greed. He urged the authorities to stop superficial market monitoring.
Sarjis Alam further remarked that market regulation would not be possible without the goodwill of major political parties.
