Just days after the recovery of elderly Nurjahan Begum's decomposed body sparked nationwide discussion, police have recovered the semi-decomposed body of another woman from the same area in the capital's Mirpur.
The body of Selina Afroz, 55, was found inside her apartment in Mirpur-6 on Wednesday night (3 June). According to police, she had been living alone in the flat for a long time.
After being informed, police recovered the body and sent it for an autopsy.
Pallabi Police Station Investigation Officer Md Hanif said an unnatural death case is being processed and the exact cause of death will be known after the investigation and post-mortem examination are completed.
Local sources said Selina's husband and two children currently live in Canada. She returned to Bangladesh about 12 years ago and had been living alone in the apartment since then.
Police believe she may have died sometime between 26 May and 3 June. Family members reportedly last spoke to her by phone on the night of 26 May, after which all communication ceased.
The incident comes only days after the recovery of 75-year-old Nurjahan Begum's semi-decomposed body from another residence in the same area on 31 May, a case that drew widespread public attention and renewed debate over the care of elderly family members living alone.
