Water Resources Minister and BNP Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee has said that sustained canal excavation could usher in a new phase of development and positive transformation in Bangladesh.
He made the remarks on Saturday while addressing a program as chief guest after inaugurating a canal re-excavation programme in Uttar Joypur Union under Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila.
Earlier, the minister formally launched the project by cutting soil with a spade under the Employment Generation Programme for the Poorest (EGPP). The re-excavation work will cover the canal stretch from Kaichabari in Uttar Joypur to the Yusufpur Rahmatkhali Canal via Manoharpur Hazir Bridge.
Speaking at the event, Anee said many canals across the country have become nearly defunct due to years of neglect, encroachment, and pollution. Illegal structures—including houses and shops—have been built along canal banks and even within waterways, while industrial waste dumping has further obstructed water flow.
He said the ongoing excavation efforts would help remove such encroachments and restore natural water channels.
Highlighting the importance of water management in an agriculture-dependent country, the minister noted that conserving water is essential for boosting the production of crops such as coconut, betel nut, and vegetables, as well as fisheries. Properly excavated canals can retain water during the monsoon and make it available in the dry season, thereby increasing overall productivity.
He added that the government has taken initiatives to restore key river systems, including Rahmatkhali, Wapdakhal, and Bhulua rivers, along with connected smaller canals in phases. Continuous implementation of such programmes, he said, is crucial to reduce waterlogging, ensure safer living conditions, and protect the environment.
On education, the minister said the government is prioritizing the development of schools, colleges, temples, and madrasas. He emphasized that strengthening primary education is vital, as it forms the foundation for future learning and development.
The programme was chaired by Deputy Commissioner SM Mehedi Hasan. Among others present were Additional Superintendent of Police Hossain Mohammad Raihan Kazemi, the minister’s private secretary Jamshed Alam Rana, Sadar Upazila Executive Officer Kathoypru Marma, and BFF Vice President Wahid Uddin Chowdhury Happy.
