Dhaka University (DU) authorities have filed a case with New Market Police Station following an attack on a bus carrying DU students during a blockade in the Science Laboratory area on Thursday.
The university’s public relations office confirmed that the case was lodged late Thursday night (January 15).
Following the incident, Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan contacted the home affairs adviser to seek assurances regarding student safety. He also held discussions with the education adviser and other senior government officials.
According to university sources, students of the proposed Central University staged a blockade in the Science Laboratory area on Thursday afternoon. During the demonstration, protesters stopped a bus transporting DU students from entering the campus.
After being informed, members of the university’s proctorial body and the transport manager rushed to the scene and safely escorted the bus away from the area. However, while the bus was being moved, the demonstrators allegedly attacked DU students, leaving at least eight students injured.
In protest, DU students organised a sit-in programme in the Nilkhet area on Thursday evening. The programme was addressed by Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan, Treasurer Professor M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, the university proctor, the provost of Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall, the director of the Leather Engineering and Technology Institute, senior teachers, assistant proctors, DUCSU leaders and representatives of the Zahurul Haque Hall Union.
Speakers expressed solidarity with the injured students and assured them that the university administration would take immediate and decisive action against those responsible for the attack.
On Friday (January 16), Treasurer Professor M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury visited the Leather Engineering and Technology Institute to inspect its facilities and assess measures to address the demands raised by students.
Meanwhile, the administrator of the proposed Central University has expressed regret to the DU authorities over the incident.
The university administration said it will take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of students and bring the attackers to justice as soon as possible.
