Vote counting in the Jagannath University Central Students’ Union (JnUCSU) election resumed after midnight on Wednesday following a five-hour suspension caused by technical problems.
The counting process was halted around 7:00pm on Tuesday due to mechanical issues. After consultations with candidates from various panels and independent contenders for the vice-president (VP), general secretary (GS), and assistant general secretary (AGS) posts, counting resumed at around 12:30am.
The process began at the central control room in the university’s central auditorium, with ballots from the Department of Anthropology counted first. A total of 278 votes were cast in the department.
Voting in both the JnUCSU and hall union elections took place from 9:00am to 3:00pm on Tuesday across 39 polling centres and 178 booths. However, long queues were reported at several departmental centres beyond the scheduled closing time, and those voters were allowed to cast their ballots.
According to the Election Commission, voter turnout was approximately 65%.
After voting concluded at all centres, ballot boxes were transported to the central control room at the university auditorium, where counting began but was suspended shortly thereafter.
JnUCSU Chief Election Commissioner Anisur Rahman said the suspension was due to technical faults, while Election Commissioner Shahidul Islam cited discrepancies in results produced by two different machines.
Election Commission sources said a total of 190 candidates were finalised for 34 posts. Of them, 157 candidates are contesting 21 posts in the university’s central students’ union, while 33 candidates are competing for 13 posts in the university’s only female hall union.
