The election of the Jagannath University Central Students’ Union (JnUCSU) will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, January 6, following a final decision taken at a syndicate meeting on Sunday afternoon.
Syndicate member Professor Dr Mohammad Bilal Hossain confirmed the decision, saying the syndicate unanimously agreed to proceed with the election. “All syndicate members, including university and government representatives, have given positive feedback on organising the JnUCSU election,” he said.
To ensure security during the polls, additional members of law enforcement agencies have been deployed on and around the campus. A police control room has also been set up at Bahadur Shah Park to monitor the campus and surrounding areas throughout the election.
Chief Election Commissioner Professor Dr Mustafa Hasan said several administrative measures have been put in place to facilitate a smooth voting process. “All teachers, officials and employees have been instructed not to take leave on January 5 and January 6,” he said, adding that teachers and officials have also been barred from bringing private vehicles onto the campus on election day.
The JnUCSU election was initially scheduled for December 30 but was postponed following an emergency syndicate meeting after the death of former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia. After student protests and demands, the university administration later announced January 6 as the new date for the election.
The polls are being closely watched by students and faculty, as the election will determine the leadership of the university’s central students’ union for the coming term.
