Dhaka is facing an uncontrollable mosquito crisis, with dengue claiming lives even as authorities spend billions on control measures. This year alone, at least 134 people have died from dengue, with 105 deaths in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and 29 in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
Residents like Rajibul Haque and Sanjida Islam in Vatara live in constant fear. Their four-year-old daughter, Zaima, spends her childhood confined indoors, with all windows and the balcony fitted with mosquito nets to avoid bites. Rajibul says, “Even opening the balcony for a short time invites mosquitoes. We live in fear, especially for children, who are among the most affected by dengue deaths.”
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), so far this year, 6,042 people in DNCC and 7,776 in DSCC have contracted dengue. As of yesterday, 859 patients remain hospitalized across both city corporations.
Experts warn the situation could worsen. Dr. Kabirul Bashar, mosquito expert at Jahangirnagar University, said, “Even in November–December, dengue will persist. Authorities must accelerate mosquito control operations.”
Despite significant spending — BDT 1,354 crore over the past 13 years — the mosquito menace continues. DSCC allocated BDT 45 crore for mosquito control this fiscal year, while DNCC allocated BDT 187 crore, up from BDT 110 crore last year. Efforts include larvicide and adulticide spraying, fogging, and public awareness campaigns.
Officials admit challenges remain due to Dhaka’s infrastructure. Stagnant water in drains, ponds, and canals, along with improper waste disposal, creates ideal mosquito breeding grounds. Many field operations face delays, and staff shortages further hinder effectiveness.
Residents report worsening conditions. Washir Rahman from Lalbagh said, “Coils and nets don’t provide relief. Mosquitoes are everywhere.” Rezaul Karim Majhi from Mirpur noted, “Rainwater accumulates in alleys, creating mosquito breeding spots. Spraying seems less frequent now.”
Both city corporations claim mosquito control operations continue regularly, with technical committees, special task forces, and ward-level monitoring. Yet, despite efforts and increased budgets, Dhaka residents continue to face fear, discomfort, and loss due to dengue.
