Dhaka ranked 22nd on the list of cities with the worst air quality, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 77 at 9:30am today (Monday).
According to the AQI index, Dhaka’s air was classified as ‘moderate,’ indicating a minor health concern. This level of air quality has persisted for the past few days.
When the AQI value for particle pollution is between 50 and 100, air quality is considered ‘moderate,’ meaning sensitive individuals should consider limiting prolonged outdoor exertion. A score between 101 and 150 is classified as ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups,’ 151 to 200 as ‘unhealthy,’ 201 to 300 as ‘very unhealthy,’ and anything above 301 is considered ‘hazardous,’ posing serious health risks to the general population.
Uganda’s Kampala, Chile’s Santiago, and the United Arab Emirates’ Dubai occupied the first, second, and third spots on the list, with AQI scores of 157, 153, and 137, respectively.
The AQI is a tool used to report daily air quality. It informs the public about how clean or polluted the air is in a specific area and the potential health effects associated with it.
