A relentless spell of early morning rain, triggered by a low-pressure system stretching from West Bengal to the North Bay through southwestern Bangladesh, threw the capital into disarray on Thursday.
The downpour, which began in the morning and lasted for nearly two hours, severely disrupted commuting and daily activities across one of the country’s busiest cities, reports UNB.
Many office-goers were seen stranded on waterlogged streets, waiting for transport in the pouring rain.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), Dhaka recorded 20 mm of rainfall in the morning.
“More rain is likely in Dhaka later in the day, although conditions are expected to improve from Friday,” said AKM Nazmul Haque, a meteorologist at BMD. He added that some districts outside the capital may continue to experience showers.
While the rain provided brief relief from the recent spell of scorching heat, it caused significant hardship for commuters and pedestrians alike.
Traffic came to a standstill in several parts of the capital, with submerged roads and slow-moving vehicles worsening the situation.
