The Local Government Division (LGD) has sent a letter to the Ministry of Law seeking its opinion on potential legal complications following the court verdict in mayoral candidate Ishraque Hossain’s election case and the Election Commission’s decision not to appeal.
The letter, signed by LGD Joint Secretary Mahbuba Irin and sent to the Law and Justice Division secretary on May 15, states that the Election Commission opted not to challenge the trial court’s verdict that declared Ishraque Hossain the elected mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
The LGD’s request reflects a cautious approach to ensure compliance with all legal requirements in the process of confirming Ishraque Hossain’s mayoral status.
In light of this, the LGD has asked whether any legal issues could arise under Section 6 of the Local Government (City Corporation) Act, 2009, before taking further procedural steps.
Ishraque Hossain, a member of the BNP’s foreign affairs committee, was declared mayor by the Dhaka First Joint District Judge and Electoral Tribunal on March 27, 2025. The Election Commission issued an official gazette on April 27 recognizing him as mayor.
