Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Mohammad Ejaz has said that no battery-powered rickshaws will be allowed to ply on Dhaka’s main roads.
“However, approved battery-powered rickshaws of standard models will be allowed to ply on roads within the city,” he said.
Mohammad Ejaj said this in his speech as the president of the meeting organized by DNCC on Tuesday titled “Updated progress and future steps to be taken on the construction of standard models and prototypes of battery-powered rickshaws (e-rickshaws).
Stating that such a decision has been taken to restore order on the roads of the capital and reduce traffic congestion, the DNCC administrator said that a high-level committee will be formed soon to prepare standard models and policies for battery-powered rickshaws (e-rickshaws).
The meeting formulated a proposal for type-approval and registration of the new standardized model of three-wheeled low-speed e-rickshaws of BUET’s BEPRC Easy Bike Project. Manufacturing companies have been invited to prepare prototypes according to this proposal.
DNCC chief executive officer Abu Sayeed Kamruzzaman, chief engineer Brig. Gen. Moin Uddin, DNCC general manager (Transport) Abdullah Al Masud were also present at the meeting.
