Workers staged a protest and blocked the highway in the Bhogra Bypass area of Gazipur city following the suicide of a female worker, Afsana Akter Laboni (30). During the demonstration, they set fire to a factory vehicle.
The protest began around 8 am on Monday, as workers blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. At one point, they pulled a factory vehicle outside and set it on fire, disrupting traffic for a considerable time.
Afsana Akter Laboni was the daughter of Afsar Ali from Panchrukhi in Nandail, Mymensingh.
According to reports, a female worker of Panorama Apparels Ltd in the Bhogra area committed suicide by jumping from the rooftop on Sunday. Upon knowing about her death, factory workers began protesting on Monday morning.
Superintendent of Police for Industrial police-2, Gazipur, AKM Johirul Islam, stated that the female worker had reportedly taken her own life on Sunday due to marital issues. No complaints were raised that day, and workers continued their shifts until the evening.
However, on Monday morning, they suddenly alleged that the worker had died because she was not granted leave. This led to chaos, forcing several neighbouring factories to declare holidays. Approximately six to seven factories announced closures.
