After about a week, the interim government has cancelled its decision to enforce metre-based fare system in CNG-run auto-rickshaws amid protests by CNG drivers against the “largely unjustified and discriminatory” move.
On Sunday morning, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) issued a notification in this regard.
In a separate notification, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) asked the protesting drivers to lift their blockades across the capital city. DMP media wing chief Md Talebur Rahman signed the notification.
On 10 February, the BRTA sent a letter to DMP asking the police to book drivers of CNG-run four-stroke three-wheelers if they are found to charge more than the fares shown in their metres. The metres were required to be installed at every vehicle of the type.
Violators would face six months in prison or maximum of Tk50,000 fine or both penalties, the BRTA letter had said.
